Understanding ICMP Echo & Latency Metrics

The Ping diagnostic uses Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo Request (Type 8) and Echo Reply (Type 0) packets defined in RFC 792 to determine destination host availability and round-trip propagation delays.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Round-Trip Time (RTT): The total time (in milliseconds) required for an ICMP packet to reach the target and return.
  • Jitter: The variance or instability in RTT values across sequential ping samples. High jitter disrupts real-time VoIP and video streams.
  • Packet Loss: The percentage of transmitted ICMP packets that failed to receive an Echo Reply due to firewall filtering or network congestion.
